About the Sudbury Road Race

Both races start and finish in the parking lot behind a middle school, heading out onto the neighborhood roads surrounding it. The longer course winds through several residential streets before looping back, with a note to use sidewalks along the busier stretches. The shorter out-and-back turns around at a nearby intersection and retraces the same road home.

The race benefits the local historical society and its museum, so the entry fees go toward preservation work in town. Check-in and bib pickup happen the morning of the race, before the first wave goes off.

Common Questions About the Sudbury Road Race

Will I finish last at the Sudbury Road Race?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 28:33, and the last recorded finisher came in around 45:20, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Sudbury Road Race a good first 5K?

It is a small race (152 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Sudbury Road Race?

The 5K winner ran 16:45 while the median finisher took 28:33. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
