About the Strides for Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk

The course runs through Gallup Park, following paved paths with some short dirt sections along the Huron River and through tree-lined stretches. The route does a couple of loops, so the surroundings stay familiar and the terrain stays gentle throughout. This is a race organized around a cause, sickle cell awareness, and the field reflects that.

Parking is at the main lot at the end of Gallup Park Road, near the playground. Follow event signs from the Fuller Road and Gallup Road entrance rather than relying on GPS, which sometimes sends you to a back lot. Packet pickup and the start line are both at the Fast Shelter, a short walk from the parking area.

Common Questions About the Strides for Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk

Will I finish last at the Strides for Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 32:50, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:22:07, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Strides for Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk a good first 5K?

It is a small race (56 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. How competitive is the Strides for Sickle Cell 5K Run/Walk?
