About the Springfield Dam Run

The course runs entirely on Army Corps of Engineers property around the Springfield Dam, mixing singletrack trail with dirt road. There is some elevation gain along the way, but the descents are quick, and the route opens up to views of Mt. Ascutney at points. It suits runners who want a little texture underfoot without committing to a full mountain race.

The afternoon runs more like a local event than a morning road race. Food and ice cream vendors set up on site, and there is music and activities, so it is worth bringing people who are not running.

Common Questions About the Springfield Dam Run

Will I finish last at the Springfield Dam Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 32:29, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:11:31, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Springfield Dam Run a good first 5K?

It is a small race (60 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Springfield Dam Run?

The 5K winner ran 18:43 while the median finisher took 32:29. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
