About the SPF: Shield, Prevent, Fight

The course loops around the lake at Walsingham Park, so the scenery stays on the water the whole way around. It is a park run, which means pavement and paths through open green space, flat enough that you can focus on the surroundings rather than your footing. Dogs and families are welcome, and the vibe leans toward a day in the park as much as a race.

After the run, there is a post-race party with food and activities. Dermatology residents are on hand to do free skin cancer screenings, which fits the race's purpose of raising awareness and funds for melanoma research. Packet pickup opens well before the start, giving you time to settle in before the gun goes off.

Common Questions About the SPF: Shield, Prevent, Fight

Will I finish last at the SPF: Shield, Prevent, Fight?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.10686 Miles field finished slower than 31:28, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:04:09, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the SPF: Shield, Prevent, Fight a good first 3.10686 Miles?

It is a small race (95 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.10686 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the SPF: Shield, Prevent, Fight?

The 3.10686 Miles winner ran 18:02 while the median finisher took 31:28. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
