About the SPASM Lake Chabot Trail Run

The course runs through Lake Chabot Regional Park, mixing paved paths with dirt roads and some single-track sections in the hills above Castro Valley. The shorter option stays mostly on pavement with modest climbing, while the longer distances push deep into the park on dirt, gaining real elevation and covering terrain that earns its difficulty. Trail shoes are worth considering regardless of distance.

Check-in and the start are both at the park marina. Pickup runs race morning only, so arriving well before your wave matters. Parking requires exact cash change at the entry gate. Those running the longer distances can stow a bag of non-valuables at the start and finish area.

Common Questions About the SPASM Lake Chabot Trail Run

Will I finish last at the SPASM Lake Chabot Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:37:46, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:19:03, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the SPASM Lake Chabot Trail Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (62 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the SPASM Lake Chabot Trail Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:45:10 while the median finisher took 2:37:46. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
