About the SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K

The courses roll through working farmland outside Middletown, past fields and along a gravel stretch beside Catoctin Creek. Historic one-lane wooden bridges cross the creek on both routes. The longer course covers more elevation change and mixes gravel and pavement; the shorter one stays on pavement but still gets the bridges and wide open farm views. Both are on open roads, so expect the occasional vehicle.

Packet pickup runs a few evenings before the race at a local running store in Frederick, with bib pickup available on race morning as well. Race-day registration is handled through a personal device, no cash or check. Access to the site closes before the start, so arriving early matters. Running strollers are welcome; headphones are discouraged given the open-road course.

Common Questions About the SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K

Will I finish last at the SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 10K field finished slower than 1:07:04, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:10:36, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K a good first 10K?

It is a small race (99 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 10K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the SMHS Makin' Hay 10K & 5K?

The 10K winner ran 39:29 while the median finisher took 1:07:04. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
