About the Scary Run

The course runs along the Columbia River on a dirt and gravel trail, with views of Mt. Hood across the water. It is largely flat, and the route splits at different points depending on which distance you chose, so pay attention to the signage and volunteers at each fork. The organizers send runners off the main trail in a few spots, so expect a surprise or two.

Packet pickup happens at a local running store the day before the race, and also at a Bi-Mart in Washougal on race morning. There is a post-race party with snacks and drinks after you finish.

Common Questions About the Scary Run

Will I finish last at the Scary Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 43:43, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:39:28, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Scary Run a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 619 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Scary Run?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 19:22 while the median finisher took 43:43. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
