About the Run On The Rocks • 10M / Half / 20M

The course runs out and back along the C&O Canal Towpath beside the Potomac River, starting and finishing at the boat ramp area. The surface is a wide, semi-paved gravel path, almost entirely flat and shaded by trees overhead. Runners choose their own distance and each has a separate turnaround point; a volunteer checks you in before you head back.

Base camp, packet pickup, and post-race food are at a covered shelter next to the train station, a short walk from the start. Parking is at the train station as well. The boat ramp lot is reserved for volunteers and supply vehicles, so arriving runners should head straight to the train station side of the tracks.

Common Questions About the Run On The Rocks • 10M / Half / 20M

Will I finish last at the Run On The Rocks • 10M / Half / 20M?

Almost certainly not. Half the 20 Miles field finished slower than 3:56:20, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:36:44, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Run On The Rocks • 10M / Half / 20M a good first 20 Miles?

It is a small race (160 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 20 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Run On The Rocks • 10M / Half / 20M?

The 20 Miles winner ran 2:16:06 while the median finisher took 3:56:20. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
