This race exists because of a specific person. Carli Smyth grew up in Pleasant Grove, built her life there, and is buried there. Her husband started this event in her memory, and the weight of that is present throughout the morning. The course offers a short option and a longer one, so people show up in every configuration, from kids to grandparents to serious runners.
The cause is Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, a rare disease that took Carli at a young age, and proceeds go toward awareness and research. The atmosphere reflects that purpose: people tend to know why they are there, and the mood sits somewhere between grief and gratitude.
