The course runs along a federally designated scenic byway through Red Rock Canyon, west of the city. Sandstone formations rise on either side, desert scrub fills the gaps between, and the Mojave opens up around you in a way that is hard to find on a road race. The pavement is smooth, but the surroundings do most of the work.
