About the Pocahontas Trail Festival

The race takes place entirely on trails inside Pocahontas State Park, looping through forested terrain on a course that has been recently redesigned. The half marathon extends onto newer trails with solid footing that the organizers describe as very runnable. Both distances share the same opening loop before splitting, so early miles have company from the full field.

The staging area sits on a large grass field next to the boat launch, reached by following the park road past the entrance station. Packet pickup runs race morning at the staging area. There is a parking fee to enter the park, and cash moves you through the entrance faster than a card. Bathrooms are available near the start and finish.

Common Questions About the Pocahontas Trail Festival

Will I finish last at the Pocahontas Trail Festival?

Almost certainly not. Half the 6.2 Miles field finished slower than 1:07:28, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:56:56, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Pocahontas Trail Festival a good first 6.2 Miles?

It is a small race (52 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 6.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Pocahontas Trail Festival?

The 6.2 Miles winner ran 38:46 while the median finisher took 1:07:28. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
