About the Plymouth Runway Mile & 5K

Both courses start on the south side of the airport terminal and head out on a newly built taxiway before turning onto the actual runway. The pavement is dead flat with almost no elevation change, which makes for genuinely fast running. The mile turns around and comes straight back; the longer race loops past airplane hangars and around the ramp before a long push down the full runway.

Parking on race day is not at the airport itself. Runners leave their cars at Plymouth High School and ride a shuttle bus over, so plan to arrive with time to spare. Aircraft, including helicopters, are parked on the field for people to walk around, and helicopter rides are available on site for a fee.

Common Questions About the Plymouth Runway Mile & 5K

Will I finish last at the Plymouth Runway Mile & 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 30:31, and the last recorded finisher came in around 49:03, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Plymouth Runway Mile & 5K a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (137 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Plymouth Runway Mile & 5K?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 15:38 while the median finisher took 30:31. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
