About the Pittsburg Rotary Gorilla Grind 5K

The course starts and finishes in front of a gymnasium on the Pittsburg State University campus, making it a natural fit for the school's Homecoming weekend. Chip timing keeps results honest, and age group awards go deep into the field. Morning race time here can run cold, so dress for it.

Packet pickup opens early in the gymnasium entryway on race morning, so there is no need to arrive the night before. Water and light snacks are at the finish line. Proceeds from the race fund scholarships for local students heading to PSU, including one earmarked for the Army ROTC program.

Common Questions About the Pittsburg Rotary Gorilla Grind 5K

Will I finish last at the Pittsburg Rotary Gorilla Grind 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 35:16, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:02:53, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Pittsburg Rotary Gorilla Grind 5K a good first 5K?

It is a small race (73 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Pittsburg Rotary Gorilla Grind 5K?

The 5K winner ran 21:35 while the median finisher took 35:16. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
