About the Pilar McLemore Butterfly Run

The course runs through the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center, starting at the West Gate near Maude Cobb. The gardens give the route a quiet, shaded feel, more trails and greenery than a typical road race. The race raises money for the Texas Oncology Foundation, with funds staying local to support East Texas families dealing with cancer.

After the finish, there is breakfast at the arboretum. A short children's run through the gardens follows the main event, open to younger kids at no extra charge. Butterfly wings are optional but apparently common enough that the organizers feel they need to mention it.

Common Questions About the Pilar McLemore Butterfly Run

Will I finish last at the Pilar McLemore Butterfly Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 37:02, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:09:59, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Pilar McLemore Butterfly Run a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 248 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Pilar McLemore Butterfly Run?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 12:29 while the median finisher took 37:02. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
