About the Onarga ALA Poppy 5K

The course is paved and stays flat the whole way, looping through Durham Park and out into the surrounding streets before finishing back near the American Legion Post building on the park's eastern side. The race is put on by the American Legion Auxiliary and carries a clear sense of purpose, honoring veterans through the red poppy tradition that runs through the event's identity.

Packet pickup opens before the start at the American Legion building, which also serves as the finish area. Restrooms are on site. Parking is tight at the building itself, but the park's pool lot and a nearby middle school both offer overflow spots, with a short walk back to the start.

Common Questions About the Onarga ALA Poppy 5K

Will I finish last at the Onarga ALA Poppy 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 39:51, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:02:12, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Onarga ALA Poppy 5K a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (50 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Onarga ALA Poppy 5K?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 20:29 while the median finisher took 39:51. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
