The race is organized by the Muskogee High School Junior ROTC as a patriotic remembrance, and that context shapes the whole morning. There is a brief memorial ceremony before the start, so the atmosphere is quieter and more deliberate than a typical weekend road race. Both the short fun run and the longer distance use the same start area at Hatbox Events Center.
