About the Nail the Rail Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

The course follows a converted railroad corridor that runs along the Sacramento River and Keswick Lake, starting from the base of Shasta Dam. The old rail bed makes for a smooth, level surface with almost no elevation change, so the focus is entirely on the scenery moving past you rather than anything underfoot.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at a local running store in Redding, with race-morning pickup available at the start area near the dam. Parking and the start line are at the OHV staging area, which you reach by crossing the dam and dropping down to the flat below it.

Common Questions About the Nail the Rail Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Will I finish last at the Nail the Rail Half Marathon, 10K & 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:07:36, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:49:00, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Nail the Rail Half Marathon, 10K & 5K a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 201 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Nail the Rail Half Marathon, 10K & 5K?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:14:34 while the median finisher took 2:07:36. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
