About the Naatsisaan Trail Races

The courses start and finish at a high school and push into genuinely remote high desert terrain. The longer routes arc around Lost Mesa, climbing past an old fire site and dropping into Beaver Canyon before turning back. Expect dirt roads, old doubletrack, and trail underfoot, with wide open views from the upper reaches of the mountain. Weather can swing hard, and snow is a real possibility.

Rustic camping is available on the school grounds, with restroom and shower access inside the building. The afternoon brings a community cookout and live music near the finish, with a trunk-or-treat activity timed around the end of the shorter race. Motel options exist in a few towns, each a couple of hours out, so plan ahead if you want a bed.

Common Questions About the Naatsisaan Trail Races

Will I finish last at the Naatsisaan Trail Races?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 44:32, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:16:11, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Naatsisaan Trail Races a good first 5K?

It is a small race (28 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Naatsisaan Trail Races?

The 5K winner ran 25:56 while the median finisher took 44:32. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
