About the 24th ANNUAL NAACP GEORGE V. TANKARD, JR. MEMORIAL 5K Run/Walk AND 1 MILE FUN RUN
The course runs through Oak Bluffs along the harbor and around East Chop, with open water views of Vineyard Sound for a good stretch of the route. It is a certified road course that starts in Ocean Park, at the center of town, and winds through the surrounding streets before bringing you back. A shorter distance for younger kids starts near the harbor at a hotel called Summercamp.
Post-race awards are held at the Summercamp Hotel. The race benefits the Martha's Vineyard NAACP scholarship fund, which supports local high school seniors, so the finish-line crowd tends to include people with a stake in that beyond the running.
