About the Mountaineer Turkey Strut 5K

The course runs through the Courthouse Square in downtown Mount Vernon, so you are moving through the heart of town on a Thanksgiving morning. It is a chip-timed race with age group awards, which means there is real competition alongside folks just burning a few calories before the meal.

Packet pickup the evening before is at a local coffee shop, with a race-morning option at the downtown green space near the start. Runners are asked to bring a couple of canned goods for a local food pantry. Parking puts you right in the middle of things.

Common Questions About the Mountaineer Turkey Strut 5K

Will I finish last at the Mountaineer Turkey Strut 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 38:04, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:03:25, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Mountaineer Turkey Strut 5K a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (135 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Mountaineer Turkey Strut 5K?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 18:27 while the median finisher took 38:04. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
