About the Moonlight Madness 5K & Monster Mile

This is a night race through downtown Winston-Salem, starting at Bailey Park and heading out along a well-lit road on an out-and-back route. The course is flat and fast, and the organizers note they have seen quick times on it. Headlamps are recommended. You can run the mile, the longer distance, or both back to back for a combined challenge.

Packet pickup happens at a brewery tasting room and a local running store in the days before the race, with limited race-day pickup available at Bailey Park. Parking is free along nearby side streets and in a garage a block or two away. After you finish, the park has live music, craft beer, and food, and the party runs well into the evening.

Common Questions About the Moonlight Madness 5K & Monster Mile

Will I finish last at the Moonlight Madness 5K & Monster Mile?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 32:55, and the last recorded finisher came in around 56:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Moonlight Madness 5K & Monster Mile a good first 5K?

A field of 478 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Moonlight Madness 5K & Monster Mile?

The 5K winner ran 16:36 while the median finisher took 32:55. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
