About the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon & Half Marathon

The course runs through Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park on dirt and jeep roads, cutting into backcountry terrain that most visitors never reach. Landmarks along the marathon route include Totem Pole, Rain God Mesa, and a natural arch loop. Both the marathon and half marathon open with a sharp descent and finish with that same elevation paid back on the way in.

This is a cupless event, so bring your own hydration vessel; aid station volunteers will fill it along the way. Packet pickup runs the evening before at the Visitor Center near the flagpoles, with race-morning pickup available as a backup. Lodging options closest to the start include a hotel inside the park itself and a lodge with camping a short drive away.

Common Questions About the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon & Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon & Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:38:51, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:35:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon & Half Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 219 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon & Half Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:27:10 while the median finisher took 2:38:51. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
