About the McGinn Memorial Cross Country Challenge

The meet takes place on Reservoir Hill, a wooded rise in the center of town, on a course that mixes hilly forest roads with single-track trail. There is genuine climbing here; this is not a flat cross country layout. The hill setting means the course has shape and changes underfoot throughout.

The venue is reached from Hot Springs Boulevard, just off Main Street, via a steep dirt road beside the post office. Spectators park in the first open field past the gate, and volunteers are there to direct traffic. Buses go all the way to the top of the hill.

Common Questions About the McGinn Memorial Cross Country Challenge

Will I finish last at the McGinn Memorial Cross Country Challenge?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3K field finished slower than 15:12, and the last recorded finisher came in around 19:17, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the McGinn Memorial Cross Country Challenge a good first 3K?

It is a small race (68 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the McGinn Memorial Cross Country Challenge?

The 3K winner ran 12:29 while the median finisher took 15:12. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
