About the Lock 2 Lock Marathon/Half Marathon/10k

The course runs along the C&O Canal Towpath, a packed-dirt path that traces the old canal through the Williamsport area. The terrain is almost entirely flat, with barely any elevation change over the full distance. All three distances share the same out-and-back route between a pair of historic canal locks, with marathoners completing the stretch twice. Aid stations are spaced generously, stocked with water, Gatorade, pickle juice, and chips.

The start area is at a canal lockhouse, but parking is elsewhere: two nearby lots serve the race, and runners walk a short distance in from there. Packet pickup runs on race morning near the start, and also on the two evenings before at spots in Hagerstown and Williamsport. A tarp near the start line lets you stage personal nutrition and gear for the race.

Common Questions About the Lock 2 Lock Marathon/Half Marathon/10k

Will I finish last at the Lock 2 Lock Marathon/Half Marathon/10k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:19:36, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:54:13, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Lock 2 Lock Marathon/Half Marathon/10k a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (149 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Lock 2 Lock Marathon/Half Marathon/10k?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:13:46 while the median finisher took 2:19:36. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
