Both distances follow a natural-surface trail that winds close to the shore of Lake Grapevine, keeping the water in view for most of the run. Bare trees and open sky are typical in winter, and the weather can be genuinely cold. It is a trail feel, not a road race feel.
A portion of the proceeds goes to a scholarship fund supporting local track and cross-country runners, so the entry fee does some work beyond the race itself.
