About the Kennebec Mountain Run

The course climbs hard into alpine terrain above Hesperus, pushing through the La Plata Mountains to a high pass where the views open wide over two river valleys below. The upper stretch is rugged and exposed, with wildflowers through the meadows when conditions are right. This is a mountain race in the full sense, not a rolling trail with a scenic overlook at the turnaround.

Proceeds from the race go to the local search and rescue organization, which gives the whole morning a grounded, purposeful feel. The people who know these mountains best have a stake in the event.

Common Questions About the Kennebec Mountain Run

Will I finish last at the Kennebec Mountain Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 15 Miles field finished slower than 3:13:55, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:45:36, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Kennebec Mountain Run a good first 15 Miles?

It is a small race (98 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 15 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Kennebec Mountain Run?

The 15 Miles winner ran 2:01:54 while the median finisher took 3:13:55. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
