About the KC Pet Project 5K

The course runs through Swope Park, a historic stretch of green in Kansas City, and finishes at the KC Pet Project animal shelter. Dogs are welcome on the course with their owners, so expect some four-legged company along the way. The route is a park run with that shelter finish giving it a specific purpose you feel from the start.

After crossing the line, there is a festival atmosphere outside the shelter, with coffee on hand and a chance to meet foster dogs and interact with sponsors. It is the kind of finish area that lingers, especially if animals are your thing.

Common Questions About the KC Pet Project 5K

Will I finish last at the KC Pet Project 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 42:56, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:20:50, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the KC Pet Project 5K a good first 5K?

With 777 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the KC Pet Project 5K?

The 5K winner ran 19:11 while the median finisher took 42:56. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
