About the Kaweah Lake Bottom Trail Run

The course runs across a dry lake bed outside Three Rivers, which makes for an unusual surface underfoot. Without water, the lake bottom opens into a wide, flat expanse with views of the surrounding hills. It is a trail race in feel but the terrain is more open than wooded, and the setting is genuinely strange in the best way.

Parking is tight, so carpooling helps. There is food and music at the finish, and the race benefits a nearby retreat center.

Common Questions About the Kaweah Lake Bottom Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Kaweah Lake Bottom Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 39:02, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:20:40, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Kaweah Lake Bottom Trail Run a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (122 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Kaweah Lake Bottom Trail Run?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 19:37 while the median finisher took 39:02. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
