The course runs through Humboldt Redwoods State Park along the Avenue of the Giants, under old-growth redwood trees that block out the sky on both sides of the road. The pavement is smooth and the terrain is gentle enough that the marathon qualifies for Boston. Most of the time you are running through a tunnel of trees rather than open sky.
