About the Howell Melon Run

The Howell Melon Run takes place in downtown Howell in the evening, which gives the whole thing a different feel from a typical morning race. The main event is a road run, but the night also brings a mile run and shorter novelty events, including a melon roll, that seem aimed at getting the whole crowd involved. Proceeds go toward community programs in the area.

Packet pickup runs for several days before the race at a local recreation center, with race-day pickup available on-site as well. The start area is right in downtown, so parking and getting your bearings should be straightforward once you are there.

Common Questions About the Howell Melon Run

Will I finish last at the Howell Melon Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 33:09, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:24:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Howell Melon Run a good first 5K?

A field of 657 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Howell Melon Run?

The 5K winner ran 15:58 while the median finisher took 33:09. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
