About the Hood Mesa Trail Run

The Hood Mesa Trail Run runs through Lions Wilderness Park on flowing singletrack across the mesa. The terrain is trail, not pavement, and the route follows the natural contours of the land. Several distance options mean runners can pick how much mesa they want to take on, from a short loop to a longer stretch of the same trail system.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at Southwest Runners Store, with a second window at the park on race morning before the start. The park serves as both the start and finish, so parking and staging are all in one place.

Common Questions About the Hood Mesa Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Hood Mesa Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5 Miles field finished slower than 50:26, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:15:14, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Hood Mesa Trail Run a good first 5 Miles?

It is a small race (53 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Hood Mesa Trail Run?

The 5 Miles winner ran 36:52 while the median finisher took 50:26. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
