About the Hill Thrill 5k or 10 Mile Road Race

The race is named for a Haverhill woman who spent her career advocating for children in the area and was herself a devoted runner. The course leans into the city's hilly terrain. The shorter distance is a workout on its own; the longer route adds several miles of running before the hills arrive, so you feel them at the end.

After the race, the afterparty moves to a restaurant on Essex Street, where age-group prizes are handed out and the crowd is a mix of people who knew Michelle and runners who simply showed up for the hills.

Common Questions About the Hill Thrill 5k or 10 Mile Road Race

Will I finish last at the Hill Thrill 5k or 10 Mile Road Race?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 50:19, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:12:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Hill Thrill 5k or 10 Mile Road Race a good first 5K?

A field of 245 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Hill Thrill 5k or 10 Mile Road Race?

The 5K winner ran 19:38 while the median finisher took 50:19. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
