About the HEROES 5K Run - Fun Walk & Pancake Breakfast

This race runs in Huntersville and is organized by an American Legion Auxiliary unit, so the atmosphere skews toward veterans, active military, and their families. The course is a standard road distance, timed for those chasing a result and untimed for those out for a morning walk. A pancake breakfast runs donation-style after the race, with awards following shortly after.

Registration and packet pickup happen on race morning, so there is nothing to do the day before. Parking is on the post, with spaces on both sides of the building. The grassy overflow area north of the building can get muddy after rain, so trail shoes or old sneakers are worth considering if the week has been wet. Enter from Maxwell.

Common Questions About the HEROES 5K Run - Fun Walk & Pancake Breakfast

Will I finish last at the HEROES 5K Run - Fun Walk & Pancake Breakfast?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 31:47, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:02:41, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the HEROES 5K Run - Fun Walk & Pancake Breakfast a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (66 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the HEROES 5K Run - Fun Walk & Pancake Breakfast?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 18:15 while the median finisher took 31:47. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
