About the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5k Run/Walk

The course runs through the Kaibab National Forest on the Coconino Plateau, within a newly designated national monument near the Grand Canyon South Rim. Terrain shifts from pavement to gravel to soft and hard-packed dirt to rocky jeep roads, so trail shoes are not optional. The longer courses are genuinely hilly and rugged. The shorter route is mostly paved with a dirt out-and-back section that finishes on a quick downhill.

Packet pickup happens the evening before at the IMAX Theater in Tusayan, where a pasta dinner is also available. Race morning pickup opens early at the same location. The start and finish are in the IMAX parking lot, with bathrooms inside and parking steps away. After the race there is a beer garden and a pancake breakfast hosted nearby by the local fire department.

Common Questions About the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5k Run/Walk

Will I finish last at the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5k Run/Walk?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:46:35, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:30:34, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5k Run/Walk a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 236 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Grand Canyon Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, & 5k Run/Walk?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:43:07 while the median finisher took 2:46:35. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
