About the Gordy's First Race

Gordy's First Race goes out on New Year's Day in Westfield, honoring a longtime local runner and Boys & Girls Club supporter. The race benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield, and the same volunteer crew behind the Westfield Half and the shorter companion race puts it together each year. There are a couple of distance options, so runners can pick what fits the morning.

Common Questions About the Gordy's First Race

Will I finish last at the Gordy's First Race?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 33:29, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:00:02, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Gordy's First Race a good first 5K?

It is a small race (112 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Gordy's First Race?

The 5K winner ran 18:41 while the median finisher took 33:29. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
