About the Golden Gate Trail Run

The Marin Headlands give this race its character. Most of the running is on singletrack and dirt roads, with just enough pavement to connect things. The terrain is genuinely hilly, with sustained climbing across every distance option. On clear days you can see the Pacific, the bay, and the bridge from the ridgelines.

Check-in is at the Rodeo Beach picnic area on race morning. The Rodeo Beach parking lot is closed to runners, so the organizers direct people to nearby lots along Bunker Road and Mitchell Road, with a walking path to the start. Drop bags are accepted at the start and finish for the longer distances.

Common Questions About the Golden Gate Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Golden Gate Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:41:01, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:37:50, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Golden Gate Trail Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (177 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Golden Gate Trail Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:35:24 while the median finisher took 2:41:01. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
