About the Goblin Valley Trail Runs

The course runs through Goblin Valley State Park, where mushroom-shaped rock formations called hoodoos crowd the landscape in every direction. The trails are mostly singletrack through open desert, and the terrain puts those formations right beside you rather than in the distance. Several distance options are available, from a short out-and-back that dips into the desert to a full ultra on newer trail sections.

Packet pickup happens the evening before outside the visitor center, so you can skip the line if you are camping nearby. Race-morning pickup opens early, well before the first start. Parking is along the main park road within walking distance of the start and finish, with overflow lots and a shuttle running if the closer spots fill.

Common Questions About the Goblin Valley Trail Runs

Will I finish last at the Goblin Valley Trail Runs?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:55:29, and the last recorded finisher came in around 6:02:18, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Goblin Valley Trail Runs a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (106 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Goblin Valley Trail Runs?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:40:04 while the median finisher took 2:55:29. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
