About the Frozen Rails 5K & 10K

The course runs through the historic streets of Midway, starting and finishing at a local park, with race headquarters at a nearby elementary school. The town itself is the scenery, so expect sidewalks, old storefronts, and quiet neighborhood stretches rather than trails or open fields.

Packet pickup is offered at a Lexington running store a couple of days before, at a local church the day before the race, and again at the elementary school gym on race morning. Coffee and hot cocoa from a local roaster are at the finish, which helps on a cold New Year's afternoon.

Common Questions About the Frozen Rails 5K & 10K

Will I finish last at the Frozen Rails 5K & 10K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 33:55, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:11:45, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Frozen Rails 5K & 10K a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 279 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Frozen Rails 5K & 10K?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 16:45 while the median finisher took 33:55. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
