About the End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler

The course runs through the tunnels of the old Pennsylvania Turnpike, abandoned for decades and now used only for events like this. Inside, it is dark enough that a headlamp is required, and the pavement is uneven in places, so footing matters. The route out feels nearly flat, but the return trip reveals a gradual climb you barely noticed going the other way.

Packet pickup happens the evening before at a hotel in Breezewood, with additional pickup at the race site on both mornings. Parking is at the start and finish area, though there is only one road in and out, so arriving early helps. The start area also hosts an outdoor movie night on the old turnpike the first evening of race weekend.

Common Questions About the End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler

Will I finish last at the End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:25:38, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:29:21, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 295 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:23:49 while the median finisher took 2:25:38. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
