About the Empire Ranch Trail Run

The course runs through the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area, a working cattle ranch set in high desert grasslands. Past participants have mentioned mud, cow pies, and wide open views, which gives you a sense of what the terrain is actually like. The route is trail throughout, and the surroundings feel genuinely remote rather than groomed.

The ranch headquarters sits well outside town, so plan the drive accordingly. There is no charge to enter the conservation area. Post-race, the event has included displays about the property's history and how the ranch operates, which makes for an unhurried finish area.

Common Questions About the Empire Ranch Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Empire Ranch Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 10K field finished slower than 1:11:23, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:08:35, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Empire Ranch Trail Run a good first 10K?

A field of 261 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 10K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Empire Ranch Trail Run?

The 10K winner ran 40:42 while the median finisher took 1:11:23. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
