About the Elm Street Athletic Festival

The course tours the central boulevard and surrounding neighborhoods of Greensboro, with distances ranging from a short youth mile to a longer grand tour. The race raises money for brain cancer nonprofits, and a walk for patients, their families, and caregivers runs alongside the competitive events. There is also a chariot division for athletes with mobility limitations.

Everything starts and finishes at Natty Greene's on Elm Street in downtown Greensboro. Packet pickup runs on both evenings before race day, one at a spot in Jamestown with a food truck and a group run, and one right next to the start line. Race-morning pickup is also available. After the race, Natty Greene's opens up with live music and a beer ticket for participants.

Common Questions About the Elm Street Athletic Festival

Will I finish last at the Elm Street Athletic Festival?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 34:24, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:27:57, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Elm Street Athletic Festival a good first 5K?

A field of 457 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Elm Street Athletic Festival?

The 5K winner ran 17:01 while the median finisher took 34:24. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
