About the Eastern States 100

The course circles Pine Creek Gorge through some of the roughest trail in Pennsylvania. Rocky climbs and steep descents repeat the whole way around, with single track giving way to old logging roads and abandoned quarries. Named trails like the Black Forest and the West Rim carry the route past canyon views, waterfalls, and forest that sees very little traffic. Rattlesnakes and bears are real possibilities.

The tiny village of Blackwell sits at one end of the loop, with a historic hotel bar and a small convenience store. Ramsey, at the other end, is barely a settlement. Aid stations are well stocked, because there is almost nothing else out there. A prior trail ultramarathon finish is required to enter, and the organizers enforce that standard without exceptions.

Common Questions About the Eastern States 100

Will I finish last at the Eastern States 100?

Almost certainly not. Half the 100 Miles field finished slower than 32:52:36, and the last recorded finisher came in around 35:56:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Eastern States 100 a good first 100 Miles?

It is a small race (133 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 100 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Eastern States 100?

The 100 Miles winner ran 22:30:28 while the median finisher took 32:52:36. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
