About the Dominion Energy Cap Trail Classic

The course runs along the Virginia Capital Trail, a paved multi-use path that follows the James River corridor. Both distance options start at the Wharf Street lot, head east, then loop back past a couple of riverside parks to the Richmond floodwall before returning to the finish. The surface is smooth throughout. This is a cupless race, so bring your own bottle or collapsible cup for the water stops.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at Lucky Road Run Shop, with race-morning pickup available at the start lot. Parking fills early; the Stone Brewing lots on Williamsburg Avenue and Nicholson Street are the main options, with street parking nearby and a free GRTC Pulse bus stop a short walk from the start. Bicycle parking is available in the Nicholson Street lot if you want to ride in.

Common Questions About the Dominion Energy Cap Trail Classic

Will I finish last at the Dominion Energy Cap Trail Classic?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 35:35, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:28:36, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Dominion Energy Cap Trail Classic a good first 5K?

A field of 208 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Dominion Energy Cap Trail Classic?

The 5K winner ran 16:23 while the median finisher took 35:35. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
