About the Diablo Trail Run

The shortest course here stays mostly flat through Mitchell Canyon on dirt road, moving fast through open terrain. The longer distances climb seriously into the mountain, gaining enough elevation that the half marathon and beyond involve real singletrack and sustained effort. At the top end, the course is genuinely mountainous, not just rolling.

Check-in happens race morning at the Mitchell Canyon Trailhead. Arrive well before your start time to get your bib. There is a parking fee at the state park gate, so bring exact change. You can leave non-valuables near the start if needed.

Common Questions About the Diablo Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Diablo Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 3:12:36, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:30:42, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Diablo Trail Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (76 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Diablo Trail Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:52:02 while the median finisher took 3:12:36. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
