About the Detroit Mother's Day Run/Walk

The race takes place on Belle Isle, a state park island in the Detroit River. The start and finish are near the Scott Memorial Fountain, and the course runs through the park. Awards go to women, but men are welcome to run alongside. The kids' dash goes off just before the adult events, and the crowd near the finish tends to be loud for it.

Parking is in a large lot right next to the start and finish area, so there is no long walk to the line. Vehicles entering the island need a Recreation Passport, since it is a state park. After the race, staff and volunteers cook crepes and breakfast burritos on site.

Finish-Time Stats

Going by the 2026 results, this is a small, friendly field, and the spread of finish times is wide, so this is a mostly recreational race rather than one for club runners.

Common Questions About the Detroit Mother's Day Run/Walk

Will I finish last at the Detroit Mother's Day Run/Walk?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 46:23, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:23:57, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Detroit Mother's Day Run/Walk a good first 5K?

A field of 287 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Detroit Mother's Day Run/Walk?

The 5K winner ran 22:18 while the median finisher took 46:23. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.

Where can I train for the Detroit Mother's Day Run/Walk?

Join a local run club. WERUN313, Detroit Downtown Runners and Walkers, RUNdetroit and others in Detroit welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
