About the Dash for Dogs 5k Run or Walk

The course runs along the Androscoggin Riverwalk, an out-and-back on a paved trail that ends at a park before turning you back the same way. The start is at the local humane society, and one of the real draws is that dogs are welcome on the run, not just the walk portion, as long as they are on standard leashes.

Packet pickup happens the day before at the shelter, with race-morning pickup available as well. The start area is at the shelter parking lot, so you can picture the crowd: a lot of dogs, a lot of people who showed up specifically because of them. There are raffle prizes and age-group awards, including separate categories for those running with a dog.

Common Questions About the Dash for Dogs 5k Run or Walk

Will I finish last at the Dash for Dogs 5k Run or Walk?

Almost certainly not. Half the race field finished slower than 44:41, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:18:34, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Dash for Dogs 5k Run or Walk a good first race?

It is a small race (142 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first race, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Dash for Dogs 5k Run or Walk?

The race winner ran 17:43 while the median finisher took 44:41. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
