About the Cook Medical Beat the Heat 5K

Beat the Heat runs in the evening, which sets it apart from most road races. The course is in Winston-Salem, and the timing means you finish in the cooler part of the day rather than the heat of a summer morning. Proceeds go to local nonprofits focused on health and fitness in the area.

There is food and drink at the finish, and the post-race scene tends to stretch out a bit. The race is part of a local series organized through a Fleet Feet store, so the crowd around the finish area usually includes people who know each other and stick around.

Common Questions About the Cook Medical Beat the Heat 5K

Will I finish last at the Cook Medical Beat the Heat 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 31:09, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:03:36, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Cook Medical Beat the Heat 5K a good first 5K?

A field of 645 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Cook Medical Beat the Heat 5K?

The 5K winner ran 16:36 while the median finisher took 31:09. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
