About the Conquer the Castle

The race runs through North Chagrin Reservation on a loop course that mixes pavement and trail, with trail making up the majority of each loop. The route passes Squire's Castle, which serves as an aid station landmark mid-loop. Several distance options are available, from a short course up through ultra distances, and ruck versions are offered for those carrying weight.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at a running store in Lakewood, with race-morning pickup at the Forest Picnic Area starting well before dawn. Parking is split between lots near the reservation, and carpooling is worth planning ahead for since space close to the start is limited. A physical therapist is on site during the post-race morning hours.

Common Questions About the Conquer the Castle

Will I finish last at the Conquer the Castle?

Almost certainly not. Half the 10.3 Miles field finished slower than 1:55:14, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:30:05, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Conquer the Castle a good first 10.3 Miles?

It is a small race (167 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 10.3 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Conquer the Castle?

The 10.3 Miles winner ran 1:14:03 while the median finisher took 1:55:14. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
