About the City of Fairfax Turkey Trot 5K

The course starts near a fire station, winds through Old Town Fairfax and the George Mason University campus, then circles back to finish close to where it began. The route mixes historic streets with campus paths, so the scenery changes as you go. It runs on a holiday morning, which gives the whole thing a before-the-feast feel without anyone needing to say so.

Packet pickup runs on the two days before the race at City Hall, with a shorter pickup window at the start area on race morning. Awards go several age groups deep for both men and women, and proceeds benefit a local city benevolent fund.

Common Questions About the City of Fairfax Turkey Trot 5K

Will I finish last at the City of Fairfax Turkey Trot 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 34:58, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:21:24, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the City of Fairfax Turkey Trot 5K a good first 5K?

With 1,593 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the City of Fairfax Turkey Trot 5K?

The 5K winner ran 16:05 while the median finisher took 34:58. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
