About the Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon

The course traces the shoreline of South Hero and Grand Isle, passing farms, apple orchards, and summer cottages along Lake Champlain. The terrain is flat to rolling, all on paved roads. It starts and finishes near the former home of a seven-time Boston Marathon champion, which gives the route a quietly historic feel for those who know the name.

Packet pickup happens the two evenings before the race at a local running and ski shop in Burlington, with a shorter window on race morning at the school where the start line is. The full course is the half-marathon route run twice, so runners on the longer distance see the same scenery again on the back half.

Common Questions About the Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:14:46, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:44:45, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 252 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Champlain Islands Marathon & Half Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:19:43 while the median finisher took 2:14:46. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
